Demographic data – combining datasets, filling data gaps and providing reliable estimations (DEMODAT24) is a collaborative effort by ESPON and the JRC to provide spatio-temporarily complete datasets on demography. The main data source is Eurostat (the Statistical Office of the European Commission), complemented, where necessary, by other appropriate national and international sources. The resulting database contains a set of long time-series variables and indicators for EU regions, as well as for regions in all EFTA and most candidate countries, at all NUTS scales (NUTS1, NUTS2, NUTS3). The time-series cover the period from 1990-2022/23.
The datasets contain the following indicators:
Demographic balance:
- Population on 1st of January
- Annual population change
- Live births
- Deaths
- Net migration
Demographic structure:
- Population on 1 January by age group and sex
These datasets can be used to carry out in-depth analyses of the key demographic trends and their implications for territorial development (urbanisation, shrinking of rural areas, resilience, ageing) or for different data normalization exercises. The data can be downloaded from the ESPON Portal or JRC’s ARDECO database.
