In recent years Latvia has been among countries that, despite a moderate climate, are experiencing an increase in frequency of hazardous weather events. In the last two years Latvian communities and territories have faced a tornado, hailstorms with large hail stones, high winds and snowmelt floods due to sudden high temperatures in the winter. In addition to these events being unpredictable, they have also been highly destructive, in the midst of these reoccurring catastrophes Latvian municipalities are in need of new policies and urban design solutions that would account for the possibility of such events, as well as minimise their impact on people and the local economies.
In response, the Latvian ECP is organising an online ESPON seminar titled "Changes in climate and weather—what can we do to adapt?" on August 28th, 2024.
This event targets Latvian policymakers at both national and local level - the topic contributes to discussions of strategic national policy shifts towards climate adaptation and nature restoration, as well as to municipal responses to the changing climate that will not wait for us to be ready. As part of the TAP Adapting to the impacts of climate change the event aims to inform decision-makers on the data and knowledge available from ESPON and to relate it to on-the-ground hazardous weather experiences of local communities - it will facilitate a discussion on lessons learned and to pinpoint proactive steps forward even for territories that have not yet been harmed.
The event will be held primarily in Latvian, however, to accommodate for potential international interest, post-event information on the event and discussions conducted will also be available in English.
Registration for the Latvian-speaking audience is available here.
